Dip & Dip

Price: For 2 Dhs, 60

Where: Level 1, in front of the Food Court, Arabian Centre, Mirdif, Dubai.

Cuisine: Desserts drenched in chocolate.

Branches: 4 including Al Ain and Abu Dhabi

Contact Details: 04-4423041

Menu: Desserts. Mostly crepes with various fillings doused in chocolate. The drinks follow the same chocolatey concept. Browse their menu here.

Best Seller: I've heard raving reviews about the Fettuccini Crepe, but I have my own favourite :)

Dishes Ordered: Mallow Crepe and Cinnamon Spiced Latte

Appetizers: Umm chocolate?

Drinks: Water, Softdrinks, Frappes, Smoothies, Milk Shakes, Iced Tea Shakes, Coffee, Affogato, Oreo shake

Desserts: Its all about desserts.

Ambiance: Clean and family friendly, nothing romantic as the space is quite open with bright lighting and open to noise from the adjacent food court.

Staff: There is a lady that seats you and a waiter to take orders. I found the waiter pretty knowledgeable and good with recommendations.

Rating: 4/5

Pros: If you are craving a chocolate feast there is no better place. It has amazing no-fuss dishes that won't burn a hole through your pocket.

Cons: Their branch in Arabian Centre is strange as they have two cafes opposite each other. One would have been better off being a bit more closed which would appeal to the adults without children

Conclusion: I highly recommend the Mallow Crepe and the Spiced Latte. Its like a softer more elegant version of a smore and the cinnamon gives the latte a very sophisticated twist!

Royal & Langnickel Makeup Brush Set

Price: Dhs. 59

Where: Lifestyle stores nationwide, but mine in  Mirdif City Centre.

Colour: Many variations, mine was mostly black. Others came in Magenta, Blue and Yellow if I remember correctly.

Features: Comes with 5 brushes (I would argue 51/2) but one is double sided. Also comes in a portable book case with Velcro straps.

Longevity: Not yet tested but looks and feels pretty durable.

Rating: 4/5

Details: All the brushes are very soft with nicely packed bristles; the face brushes were dense and the eye brushes were not too sparse either. I have used them about 2 or 3 times now and haven't noticed any shedding yet.

Conclusion: A good set of tools for beginners at an amazingly affordable price point. They do the job they are meant to pretty well and the quality at that price is impressive.

Rimmel 25 Hour Lasting Finish Nude Foundation - New Formulation

Price: Dhs. 60 or so

Where: Lifestyle stores nationwide, but mine in  Mirdif City Centre.

Colour: 400 Natural Beige, which is a tad dark and cool toned for me.

Spectrum: Has 7 available shades, mostly cool toned

Consistency: New formulation and is therefore thinner and more runny than the old formulation which I love. Read about the old formulation here.

Application: Fingers or flat brush to apply, buffing brush to blend into the skin.

Blendability: Easily blended due to light consistency

Texture on skin: Smooth and soothing, doesn't grab or drag the skin

Finish: Sets semi matte but most of the time dewy on me due to my oily skin, also oxidizes because of that.

Coverage: Claims full but personally I find it medium but buildable

Longevity: Around 3 to 4 without primer or touching up with powder

Rating: 4/5

Cons: Not as thick, full coverage or long lasting as the old formulation

Conclusion: Great for someone with dry skin and is looking for an everyday, medium coverage foundation

ELF Eyeshadow Palette

Price: $20

Where: I got mine from Philippines but you can find it here

Claims: Apparently, one of Oprah's favourites, as written here

Colour: Not all are pigmented, but the ones that are, are highly so. Some are powdery while some are buttery and not all are easy to blend. One striking strange characteristic of some of the colours, especially the browns is that they don't transfer true to the colour they appear on the pan.

Spectrum: Has a wide variety but limited texture/finish; there are no metallic or shimmery ones, only mattes and satins

Application: Flat synthetic brush to pack on the colour, wet if you want it to be vibrant but too much blending with a fluffy brush greatly diffuses the colour and sort of oxidizes it with a grey tint

Blendability: Not as well as expected

Texture on skin: Smooth but some are powdery and chunky as shown in the picture

Finish: Mostly matte, some satin

Pigmentation: Not all are great but considering price and colour selection seems tolerable

Longevity: Must have apply primer to last more than 2 hours

Rating: 3/5

Cons: Pigmentation is not strong in all the colours, some do not stay long without primer

Conclusion: I would recommend this to beginners as the basic colours are there, and the neutral ones have moderate amount of pigmentation, not to mention the price is affordable considering the amount of colours available

Mikyajy Sabaya Caring Cream Foundation

Price: Dhs. 59

Where: Mikyajy stores nationwide, but mine was a bloggers' gift hamper

Claims: www.mikyajy.com - Sabaya Caring Cream Foundation

Colour: #6 the darkst available but was still way too light for me

Spectrum: Has 6 available shades, mostly neutral toned but all on the lighter/fairer side

Consistency: Thick and creamy

Application: Dense buffing brush for medium coverage or sponge for fuller coverage

Blendability: Blends well and dries fast

Texture on skin: Smooth and soothing, thick but not heavy

Finish: Sets matte, almost dries to a powder finish and does not oxidise

Coverage: Full

Longevity: Around 5 to 6 hours without touching up

Rating: 5/5

Cons: Colour selection is EXTREMELY limited, the darkest shade carering to an NC 25 complexion

Conclusion: I really didn't find a colour that matched me at all but the finish and the neutral colouring make for perfect highlighter or under eye brightener. If there was a shade in my tone I will stock a life's worth of this stuff!

ELF Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder

Price: Dhs. 29

Where: www.alshop.com

Colour: Antigua  (darker) and St. Lucia (lighter)

Spectrum: Has 3 available shades; Turks & Caicos is the 3rd shade

Consistency: Tightly packed in the pan but quite powdery when swirled by a brush

Application: Angled brush or small fan brush

Blendability: Blends well but the darker shade a bit harder

Texture on skin: Smooth and light

Finish: Mostly matte but has a little shimmer that falls off when tapped for excess

Pigmentation: The bronzers are highly pigmented but the blushers are mostly sheer

Longevity: Stays put for a good number of hours

Rating: 4/5

Cons: The bronzers are more orange undertoned than ashy, not so flattering when contouring the nose

Conclusion: Amazing value for money!

Essence Soft Touch Mousse Makeup

Price: Dhs. 19

Where: Exquisite shop in front of Manama Supermarket, Times Square Centre

Claims: Natural matte finish, dermatologically tested

Colour: 02 Matt Beige, cool toned and a little bit too dark for me

Spectrum: Has 6 available shades, mostly pink/cool toned

Consistency: Mousse-like, whipped and very light

Application: Flat brush or fingers

Blendability: Amazing to blend, dries and sets fast

Texture on skin: Smooth and doesn't crease, very light, glides on super smoothly

Finish: Sets matte, almost dries to a powder finish

Coverage: Light to medium

Longevity: Around 4 hours if not set with a powder, but I personally wouldn't because it is extremely matte to start with. If you want to prolong its coverage, I'd recommend a good primer.

Rating: 4/5

Cons: It does oxidise ever so slightly

Conclusion: I really didn't find a colour that suited me exactly but the fact that it is so light and easy to blend makes it disappear seamlessly into the skin. I would love it more if they came out with a wider colour spectrum and a fuller coverage.

Rimmel 25 Hour Lasting Finish Foundation

Asians. We seem to be in every nook and cranny of this planet yet why is it so hard to find a foundation doesn't make our faces look like they have their own ethnicity!? As every yellow undertoned Asian knows, its next to impossible to find a foundation with enough yellow pigment to pass off as decent on our skin tone. Most foundations are cool toned with lots of pink undertones that most times it requires you to either mix two colours together or adjust it with a colour counteracting finishing powder. But holy mother of colour, I have just found the holy grail of yellow hued foundations! Rimmel 25 Hour Lasting Finish Foundation in Nude 202 is all you'll ever need in your life! Granted their isn't enough time in the day to efficiently test its claim, this bad boy saw me through a very comfortable 2 hour nap. It's thick to the touch and can easily offer full coverage with a couple of pumps. It dries almost matte but doesn't feel drying on the skin. AND it is the only drugstore foundation I've tried on so far that doesn't oxidise into an unsightly grey hue after sitting on your skin for a while. It smells nice too! I can't rave enough about this product; I love love love it!

Price: Dhs.42

Where: Rimmel concession stand, Lifestyle

Claims: Sweat, humidity and transfer proof for 25 hours

Colour: Nude 202, the only one in the range that has enough yellow undertone to suit my Asian colouring

Spectrum: Has 8 available shades, mostly pink/cool toned

Consistency: Very thick but not sticky

Application: Foundation bursh to pat it on but needs something to buff it into the skin

Blendability: Easy to blend, dries and sets fast

Texture on skin: Smooth and doesn't crease, cool to the touch, somehow moisturising but not dewy but not matte either

Finish: Not matte but not oily either, just right

Longevity: Around 5 hours if not set with a powder, definitely longer if set with a mattifying powder

Rating: 5/5

Conclusion: I'd soak myself in a pool of it if possible!

LA Girl Cosmetics Pro Conceal High Definition Concealer

LA Girl Cosmetics Pro Conceal

Price: Dhs.25

Where: Girlie Stuffs - Facebook & Instagram Online Seller

Claims: LA Girl Cosmetics Pro Conceal

Colour: Amazing range, I got Toast & Classic Ivory

Consistency: Very thick but not sticky

Blendability: Easy to blend, the darker shade much more harder

Texture on skin: Smooth and doesn't crease, although the darker shade tends to set/dry faster so might leave streak marks if not blended right away

Finish: Not matte but not oily either, just right

Longevity: Around 2 hours if not set with a powder, definitely longer if set with a mattifying powder

Rating: 5/5

Conclusion: Value for money is off the roof especially since the quality is comparable to Mac's pro longwear concealer.

Seafood in a Bucket

Oh for the love of seafood!
There's something about dinning on seafood that no matter the catch nor the ambiance, it exudes a sort of elegance about it, though one knows that digging into crabshells is not the most elegant thing to witness.

Last week, Le Hubby and I decided to bring my mother in law to Seafood in a Bucket for Iftar. Located in Karama, it is easier to find when describing it as 2 to 3 buildings beside the Karama Metro Station, directly opposite the Co-operative Society on Mankhool road. It is situated on the ground floor of a building in which numerous small restaurants are abundant, most of which represent the many ethnic cuisines brought to Dubai by its ever growing expat communities.

It wasn't our first time but it was for my mother in law. Honestly, food wise, I did not find anything SPECTACULAR, granted that I myself wasn't too keen on anything seafood except fish. I did, however, find the whole hype about it utterly seductive. I first heard the restaurant from a Fiilipino Blog, or should I say a blog run by a Filipino (which conveniently, I totally forgot who). I was impressed by the rave reviews and the fact that these visitors from Abu Dhabi made the journey all the way to Dubai just for a taste, as well as their frustration at the long queue that greeted them at the door even thought it was barely 12 noon.
I myself found it a very 'funky' place to eat at, in terms of Filipino taste. It was like an upgraded version of a street food culture. The menu was only one page long and not even back to back. The items were a few staples, mostly if not all are fried; 2 to 3 kinds of Fish, Clams, Mussels, Shrimps, Sand Lobster, Lobster and Chicken Wings. There was a selection of 3 kinds of sauces to douse your mains in; Sweet Chilli, Pepper and Garlic Butter. I recommend the Pepper Sauce with its impressive balance of nutty spice and sickly sweet. I used to order the Sweet Chilli before but found that its gets cloyingly too sweet for my taste after a few bites. All this comes in plastic inserted buckets that are super handy for take outs. The rice comes in a plastic bag (so very much Filipino-sidewalk-eatery like) and is unlimited, or as Pinoys say "bottomless". A server with a huge thermos-like jug walks around the  joint offering diners more sticky Asian rice. Their drinks are unlimited as well and comes in huge glass jars, and as one will find out, will seem too much for 2 people to share without ordering a second serving! Unfortunately, I do not remember all their drinks except for the Watermelon that we always opt for and an Iced-Tea looking drink I saw on the table across ours. Strangely, I've never seen anyone order any type of softdrink. The seating arrangement is a whole different story. I abhor it. They come in the form of tables fit for 4 with matching benches meant to seat 2. They feel very flimsy and I  shudder to think how these seats will fare with their much more heavier clientele. Maybe they assumed that they will only be catering to the Filipino crowd and as we know, we Asians almost always come in tiny packages! The restaurant's interiors are not too in your face but definitely meant to be in sync with the cooler crowd, covering its walls in graffiti. I have not made up my mind about the floor to ceiling glass windows that allow passersby to look into the restaurant and accidently glimpse upon a butt crack of an unsuspecting diner whose back is against the glass.
Oh, I forgot to mention you get to eat with your hands, wear plastic gloves and a bib!
One more thing I believe has made Seafood in a Bucket wildly popular is the price tag. Just imagine this, my husband and his friend are lively eaters. Their fastfood runs consist of 2 Big Macs, 1 Big Tasty and 2 Cheeseburgers to share between them; all upsize meals. When they ate at Seafood in a Bucket, their total bill was Dhs. 80!

What: Seafood in a Bucket – (Filipino?) Seafood Restaurant
Where: Beside Karama Metro Station
Why: Because its good. And its cheap. And its not pretentious.

Smiling BKK

Considered Armed and Delicious.

How cool is it to be able to get the waiter's attention by pointing a machine gun in the air and letting loose!? IT IS NOT A REAL GUN, mind you, but damn how cool eh?
The first time my husband and I ate at Smiling BKK was on our first Valentine's together circa 2009, when the restaurant's location was snuggly tucked away in between the alleyways of Al Wasl Road and all I remember was a dish named after Snoop Dog and a picture of a really clean plate, attesting to the deliciousness of their dishes.
I'm always on the hunt for the best Pad Thais in town, so usually that is a staple for me at any ASIAN restaurant while my husband ordered a Seafood Platter for 2. My Mother in Law, being the wise woman that she is, new that amount of food would be more than enough for us chose to share with our dishes. For drinks, the norm was ordered, a bottle of water and a strange looking Coke can. I tried to be more adventurous and tried the Tea with Milk on ice (I am sure they called it a much more exciting name) and I loved it!
Overall, the food was good, the names tres interesting, the price easy on the pocket and the ambiance excruciatingly charming. I mean, have you seen that gangsta Mona Lisa? Or the Pirate one??

What: Similing BKK - Thai Restaurant
Where: Al Wasl Square, beside Safa Park on Al Wasl Road
How Much: Dhs. 250 for 3 people
Why: Because sometimes when the ambiance wins you over, the food starts to taste better. Actually, the food was good not to mention affordable. And who wouldn't want to shoot a gun in the air at a restaurant where it is treated the norm?
